What's the role?
We are seeking a Principal Data Scientist to join our team focused on redefining the next generation of navigation and map interface technologies at HERE. In this role, you will apply scalable machine learning and Big Data techniques to enable global-scale digital map-making, directly impacting the quality and intelligence of HERE’s geospatial offerings. You will lead innovation in applied data science, collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and deploy features that power intelligent mapping, navigation, and automotive-grade location solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Design and implement machine learning solutions for next-generation navigation and mapping products.
Apply statistical modeling and data science best practices to real-world mapping challenges.Collaborate across product, engineering, and design teams to deliver scalable, user-facing features.
Employ a highly scalable Big Data infrastructure and machine learning as applied to global-scale digital map-making.Bring to bear the state-of-the-art in data science within new product offerings to address emerging challenges in the industryCollaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and ship new features. Conduct code reviews to ensure code quality and adherence to coding standardsTech Stack :Python, Spark, Hadoop, Docker, AWS, Gitlab, UV, C ,Poetry, and GeoPandas

Who are you?Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science/ IT /Information Systems or equivalent.10+ years of experience in applied data science and ML, with a track record of product-driven outcomes.Strong Python programming skills, including experience in data processing, model development, and deployment.
Deep understanding of machine learning, probability, and statistical methods.
Experience with distributed computing frameworks such as Spark or Hadoop.
Hands-on experience in cloud environments (e.g., AWS) and containerized workflows.
Nice-to-Have Skills
Mapping or automotive industry experience
Deep learning and/or computer vision expertise
C programming knowledge
Familiarity with Docker, Poetry, uv, or similar build tools
Experience with geospatial libraries (e.g., GeoPandas)
Understanding of map projections, coordinate systems, and 3D geometry

About The Team
HERE Platform Solutions Architecture team is embedded inside a horizontal architecture group which has the responsibility of defining the target architecture of platform products at HERE. Given its unique horizontal position in the organization, the architecture group has a deep visibility and influence over how various software products are designed, implemented and maintained at HERE. While individual architects have deep understanding of specific products and domains, the real strength of architecture team comes from its culture of cross collaboration and knowledge sharing within the group. Solution architecture team has an additional function of bringing customer-centricity to the group. The team works with strategic HERE customers spread across the world to build solutions for their usecases by leveraging HERE location platform. In addition to creating significant customer value, the team brings back rich insights and experience from the field which then helps further shaping of product architecture and portfolio. The results produced by this team have direct impact on customer success and hence also on HERE’s competitiveness and success. Given the criticality of work done in Solution Architecture group, it is quite common for the team to be in customer and management spotlight while at the same time engaging with engineers on finer technical details.
The team consists of around 9 architects with varying level of experience and diverse backgrounds, but a like-minded attitude towards continuous learning, knowledge sharing and collective success. The team members share a common desire to apply their expertise to create actual customer value. A common trait in the team is their ability to look wide across multiple systems and also go deep into specific components when required. We are looking to reinforce our Solution Architecture team to manage an increasing line-up of our customers.
About The Role
A Senior Principal Architect is expected to contribute towards HERE's success by enabling HERE customers to succeed through a high quality and effective technical partnership as well as leadership.
As an architect, you will be responsible for deliberate, clear and consistent system designs to seamlessly integrate various products and services that are owned by HERE, partners and customers into a unified system architecture.You will be working closely with engineering teams across different internal and external organizations to build out systems that solve for customer's requirements in an efficient, scalable and cost-effective way.You will be responsible defining and communicating key technical interfaces as integration points across systems. It is expected that architecture deliveries are validated through representative prototypes/PoCs. A key aspect of the role is to translate market-centric requirements into a technical architecture that balances performance, efficiency, scalability, costs and compatibility.The role expects an ability to comprehend and function in the face of changing complexities and market needs. You will be expected to build connections across the company to acquire information as well as to drive, validate and implement key decisions.

Proven expertise in designing and managing large-scale data systemsEngineering experience in building automotive edge software (e.g embedded linux, QNX, Android(auto), iOS, Android)Proficiency in developing full-stack systems cutting across edge and cloud platformsAbility to lead and make clear progress in multi-dimensional stakeholder setupsAction-oriented approach towards problem solvingProven track record in technical leadership and mentoring positionsExperience in building production grade, vehicle-bound software systems in the automotive industryHands-on experience in building core software systems powering ADAS/AD features, AI/ML applications and SDV architecturesProven record at embracing new technologies, tools and methodologies to the benefit of businessThe role demands a strong hands-on pragmatic approach and an analytical mind-set with a solid theoretical foundation.You are expected to have foundational understanding of cutting edge technology trends like AI/ML and be able to apply them where necessary. An ability to establish oneself as a trusted technical stakeholder with the customer is seen as a valuable skill.
Qualifications
Strong computer science fundamentals. A degree in computer science or related discipline is highly desired.10+ years of experience in distributed/parallel computing software systems in various roles.5+ years in leading architect/engineer roles.Strong systems programming skills with fluency in relevant programming languages (eg. C++, Go, Rust, Java, Scala)Experience with technologies like Flink, Spark, Kafka, Redis for high volume and low latency data processing.Hands-on experience on cloud platforms like AWSSound hands-on experience in building high performance and robust edge software.Advanced level understanding of AI/ML foundations and experience in using AI/ML applicationsExperience with location-based services and digital maps in automotive context is highly preferred
This position is located in Berlin, Germany. We provide relocation assistance for candidates relocating domestically within Germany.
